Tree trunks, gleaming in the sun, line up on either side of the gravel road with grass growing down the middle. You pass through dappled shade beneath a tunnel woven of branches. Just ahead, the road vanishes into forest shadow.
Where is it taking you?
Who are you? Where are you going and why? What journey brings you to this place?
Is someone or something pursuing you or are you the pursuer?
What is your mission? How does this align to fulfillment of your deepest desire? What obstacles stand in your way? Are you confident you can overcome them or hesitant to try?
Are you alone? If not, who travels with you? Are you arguing, chatting, or enjoying companionable silence? Perhaps you are talking to yourself or to God.
Have you ever been here before? Do you know this road well or are you lost? If you are lost, do you know how to survive in the wilderness? What supplies can you rely upon?
By what means do you travel? Are you on foot, riding a bicycle, driving, on horseback, or propelled some other way?
Maybe you aren’t moving at all but are standing still, listening. Why? What do you hear? Perhaps you ran out of gas. Did someone flatten your tire and force you stop? Perhaps that fallen log you scraped by did the damage.
Where is this road located? What points does it connect?
Is it morning, midday, or afternoon? Do you fear nightfall? Have you been in the forest for days or an hour only?
Does fear, impatience, or anticipation hurry you or are you crawling along this road, jumping at every sound? Is there a junction ahead where someone you love waits for you? Or perhaps the person waiting means you harm. Why? What will happen when you meet? Will there be a fight or gunshots? Or maybe you’ll try to sneak past your enemy after dark.
What is your physical condition? Are you feverish and hallucinating? Are your emotions rock-steady, frayed at the edges, or completely shredded? What is your mental state?
Are you desperately trying to be quiet or careless of the noise you make? Why?
Do you hear birds singing, water rushing, animal calls, a vehicle approaching, or other sounds?
Listen to this video of forest sounds and imagine what could happen in your story world.
