Visual Writing Prompts: Rustic Bridge
On a journey as the main character of your novel, you come to a river cutting a deep channel across thirsty land. Spanning the river is a wooden bridge that looks like it’s seen better days.
Are you happy to be here or wish you were somewhere else? Why are you traveling? Where have you come from, and what is your destination? Is a companion with you, or are you alone? Are you running away, being pursued, or are you chasing someone?
Are there birds singing or is the rush and gurgle of water the only sound? What is the weather like? Is it a pleasant day, or does the sun beat down on you?
Do you test the bridge, then continue on? Or are you on such an urgent errand you hurry across without hesitating? Do you break your journey here? Maybe someone is waiting for you, or are you the one who is waiting? Why?
Are you walking or on horseback? Listen to the appropriate sound effects, below, with your eyes closed.
How did you feel as you crossed the bridge? What thoughts ran through your mind? Did you stop in the middle to gaze down at the water flowing past? Do you linger there, daydreaming?
Who owns the land this bridge is on? Is it you or someone you know? Who built the bridge? Do you have happy childhood memories of this place is does it bring a sense of dread? What happened on this bridge? Was it a crime, a kiss, a rejection, or something else? Or maybe this is the first time you’ve seen this bridge.
Does something happen here? An ambush, a romance, a murder? Something else? Is this a place of mystery? Do you step off the bridge into another time or world? Does the bridge fade away after you cross? Does it lead you to safety or danger?
What story is waiting for you here?
